What is diffuse menopausal alopecia?
Hair loss during and after menopause is very common and is known as diffuse alopecia, as hair density is lost progressively.
This is due to hormonal changes that occur when oestrogen decreases and androgens increase, causing abnormal hypersensitivity in some hair follicles on the scalp. This leads to a shortening of the anagen phase, meaning that new hairs grow back increasingly finer and weaker, especially in the frontal and parietal areas.

Interesting facts
Diffuse menopausal alopecia does not lead to total hair loss, although it is possible that there may have been another more significant previous hair disorder and that this hormonal change has worsened it. Not all women suffer from it, although a significant number notice that thinning is occurring due to a decrease in thickness, making part of the scalp more visible.
